ACHIEVEMENTS OF BOMBAY COLLEGE OF PHARMACY 

 

The BOMBAY COLLEGE OF PHARMACY has completed 50 Years! of its existence

  • The idea of establishing the Bombay College of Pharmacy (BCP) was formulated under the leadership of the Late Prof. M. L. Khorana in 1956, in the form of a short term course called "Practising Pharmacists Training (P.P.T.) course"

  • A year later, in 1957, the Diploma course was started and BCP was formally constituted

  •  In 1966, the building at Kalina was inaugurated and BCP hosted the 18th Indian Pharmaceutical Congress

  • In 1970, BCP was affiliated to the Mumbai University for the B. Pharm. course and

  • In 1973 M. Pharm. and Ph. D. courses were also started

  • In 1973, the college also received its first research grant from CSIR. Since then several important events have marked the progress of BCP

  • 1976-The UNESCO Microbiology workshop

  • 1977-The Second Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Congress jointly with the 28th I.P.C.A. and the Pharma Expo - 77

  • 1981-The Research Society of the Bombay College of Pharmacy was formed

  • 1982-The M.S.D. auditorium, with seating capacity of 500 was opened

  • 1984-The Silver Jubilee of the college was celebrated and an International Symposium on "Advances in Drug Delivery System" was held

  • 1987-The Vasvik Research Wing was inaugurated and an International Symposium on "Controlled Release Dosage Forms" was held and the Staff Quarters for senior faculty members constructed

  • 1988-M. K. Rangnekar Memorial Laboratory was inaugurated;

  • 1990-1993-Foundation and opening of "Bioavailability Centre"

  • 1993-International Symposium on "Update on Bioavailability and Bioequivalence" and Permanent Affiliation Granted By University of Mumbai

  • 1995-Inauguration of "Ramesh Banatwala Memorial Industrial Pharmacy Laboratory"

  • 1996-1997-Donation of Rs. 600,000 and 1,000,000  from E. Merck Ltd. And German Remedies for Renovation of E. Merck Laboratory and Chemistry Laboratory, respectively

  • 1998-Golden Jubilee IPCA Conference Jointly with FAPA Conference

  • 2001-Patents Awareness Workshop in Collaboration with TIFAC - Govt. of India

  • 2002-Establishment of Academy for Clinical Excellence (ACE) in Collaboration with Pfizer Global Research

  • 2005-Establishment of Academy of Pharmaceutical Management in association with Prescription Pharma Support.  Establishment of the Nihchal Israni Microbiological Laboratory in the MKR Drug Testing Facility.  Renovation of the Students Reading Room and setting up of the Computer Centre.

 

In the effort to be the premier institute, BCP has been in the forefront with regard to undergraduate pharmacy education as well as its research programs for training Master's and Doctoral students. An indication of the insight of the faculty in conducting nationally and industrially relevant research is evident from the fact that the faculty at BCP has been recipients of over Rs. 40 million as research grants from AICTE, DST, UGC, CSIR, ICMR, and Rs 10 million in research grants from the corporate sector. The funding has made BCP self sufficient in several important facilities like spectrophotometers, HPLC, GC, HPTLC, Silicon Graphics Computers, molecular modeling software, ultra-low temperature storage media, high speed centrifuges, laser doppler flowmeter, plethysmometer, electrophoresis equipment, spheronizer, granulators etc.

 

The student community of BCP besides being academically excellent has also shown its talent in various extra-curricular activities.  They have participated in inter - collegiate sports events organized annually by Indian Pharmaceutical Association (MSB) and won prizes in the following events: Cricket: (1999) Winner, Runner up in 2001; Badminton: (2001) Winners; Table Tennis: (2000) Winners, (2001) Winner, (2005) Winner; Volley Ball: (2000) Winner.  Dance: Winner in 2000 and 2001 and runner up in 1999; Solo singing male: (2005) Winner; Solo singing female: (2005) Winner at Mood Indigo and Rx festival; Instrumental Music: Winner 2001; Skit: Runner up 2001; Ad - mad show: Runner up 2005, 2001; Quiz: Runner up 1999. Won the prestigious 'Dance Trophy' for two consecutive years. Won 2nd prize in Hindustani Classical Instrument competition, during the cultural event 'SPACE' (Sardar Patel Engg. College). Won 1st prize in the inter collegiate 'Pharma-Quiz' competition organized by SVB College of Pharmacy, Dombivali in 2000 and consolation prize in 2001. Students also participated in Medical Health camps, Blood Donation camps and "Pharmacists Rallies" organized by Indian Pharmaceutical Association
